Tyler's damaging-wind season is a summer season. In the NOAA Storm Events record for 2000–2025, 43 of the 97 damaging-wind days logged within ten miles of Tyler fell in June, July and August — 44% of them in the quarter when Dallas–Fort Worth is usually quiet. That is why so many Tyler repair calls start with a hardwood limb through the deck in July rather than a hail bruise in April, and why we size a repair off what the storm actually did instead of off a calendar.

Water shows up on a ceiling a long way from where it got in. We work the roof from the stain backwards — penetrations, valley terminations, step flashing, wall tie-ins, nail pops — before anyone talks about tearing anything off. Tyler logged 80 flash-flood events within ten miles in the NOAA record against Sherman's 34, so a Tyler leak is often a volume problem as much as an opening.
The NWS surveys around Tyler name hardwood and pine uproot as the primary damage indicator over and over. That means the common Tyler failure is not uplift — it is a trunk or limb through the deck. We open the affected bays, replace broken rafters or decking, and rebuild the assembly rather than shingling over a cracked substrate.
A shingle that lifted and laid back down looks fine from the driveway and is already failed — the sealant strip is broken and it will take the next gust. We check the field by hand along the rake and ridge lines where uplift starts, and we mark creases so you can see what we are calling.
On Tyler's older stock most repeat leaks are metal, not shingle: rusted-through valley metal, counterflashing that was face-nailed into brick, pipe boots split by twenty East Texas summers. These get replaced with new material, not sealed over with mastic.
Dated photos of every area of damage, a written scope in the order the work has to happen, and the storm date it ties to. You own that file whether you use us for the repair or not. We do not file your claim for you and we do not tell you what your policy owes.
June through August in Tyler, the storm that takes your roof is often followed by rain the same night. We tarp and dry-in to stop the water first and scope the permanent repair in daylight, so nobody is making a roofing decision on a wet deck at 9 p.m.
Someone gets on the roof. We photograph the damage, the decking condition where we can see it, and the areas that are fine — the last one matters, because it is what keeps a repair a repair.
Repair, partial, or full replacement, with the reason for each. On a Tyler roof the deciding factors are usually the age of the shingle, whether the mat is brittle enough that adjacent shingles break when we lift them, and whether the decking took a hit.
Tyler's residential roof replacement permit is $100.00 flat under Sec. 6-3 of the City Code. Repairs below the replacement threshold are handled differently — we confirm with Building Services rather than guess, and we tell you which bucket your job is in before we start.
We magnet-sweep the drive and the beds, haul the debris, and walk the finished work with you. If the repair was tied to a storm date, you get the closing photos for your file.
The practical problem with an asphalt repair is not the shingle, it is the match. Granule color drifts as a line ages and the discontinued profiles from the 1990s are genuinely hard to source. We tell you up front whether we can get a close match or whether the patch will read as a patch from the street.
More than one Tyler home in three predates 1960 — 17,019 of the city's 46,019 housing units, per the Census Bureau's 2024 five-year estimates. Pre-1960 roofs in Tyler often have plank decking of varying board width rather than sheet goods, and a tree strike on plank decking is a framing repair, not a shingle repair.
Valley metal, counterflashing, drip edge, pipe boots and chimney pans are replaced with new material when they have failed. Sealant is a finish detail on a correctly built joint, never the joint itself — a bead of mastic buys a Tyler roof one summer.
Our labor on the area we repaired. If the repair leaks, we come back and make it right — that is the whole of it, and it is in writing before you sign anything.
Any shingle, underlayment or metal we install carries its manufacturer's own warranty in your name. We hand you the product documentation; we do not restate the manufacturer's terms as if they were ours.
Every repair leaves with a written scope listing what was replaced and what was left alone. If a second opinion disagrees with us later, you have the document to argue from.

Because you are in a different storm regime. Tyler's damaging-wind days peak in June (19 days in the NOAA 2000–2025 record) with August (15) ahead of both April and May. June through August account for 43 of Tyler's 97 wind days — 44%. Sherman and Corsicana both run about 32% for the same quarter. East Texas summers are wet and unstable, which produces pulse storms and wet downbursts through the hot months; the DFW dryline supercell season is a spring event. Your roof is not unlucky, it is in East Texas.
The three things that decide it on a Tyler roof are shingle age, mat condition, and decking. If the shingles are brittle enough that lifting one to slide a new one under breaks its neighbors, a repair turns into a bigger repair every time. If a tree strike cracked decking or a rafter, the framing has to be right regardless. And if you are chasing the fourth leak in three years on the same slope, you are paying for a replacement in installments. We will tell you which of those you are looking at and show you the photos behind it.
Get everybody out from under the opening, cut power to the affected area if water is near fixtures or wiring, and move what you can. Then call us for a dry-in. We do not cut trees off structures — that is a tree service with the right rigging, and doing it wrong turns a roof repair into a framing rebuild. We will tarp what can safely be tarped, photograph the whole thing for your file, and scope the permanent repair once the limb is off.
Tyler's published fee schedule at Sec. 6-3 carries a $100.00 flat line for Residential Roof Replacement. A small repair generally is not a replacement, but where the line sits is Building Services' call, not ours. We confirm it with the City for your specific job and tell you the answer before we start — we do not skip a permit and we do not charge you for one you do not need.
Yes, and it is worth knowing before you order material. Tyler Code Sec. 10-792 requires a Certificate of Appropriateness before you alter any exterior architectural feature of a designated historic structure, and the ordinance defines that term to include the kind, color and basic texture of all exterior building materials. That plainly reaches shingle type and shingle color. The Board has up to 45 days from a complete application to hold the public hearing, so on a claim timeline you want that application in early. Each Historic District Overlay in Tyler is designated by its own ordinance with its own standards, so we read your district's, not a generic one.
Tyler averages 2.62 hail days a year within ten miles — more frequent than Corsicana — but the very large stones are rarer than in Sherman. The largest entries in the record are 2.75-inch reports at Gresham (2008), Pine Springs (2023) and Noonday (2024). Being straight with you about provenance: every 2.50-inch-and-up stone in Tyler's record came from a public or broadcast-media report, not a trained spotter. The best professionally observed large hail in Tyler is 1.75 inches — golf ball — reported by law enforcement on 9 May 2002. Anybody quoting you baseball-size Tyler hail as established fact is overstating the record.
Not in the NOAA record. Tyler's distinct hail days per year ran 2.77 in 2000–2012 and 2.43 in 2019–2025 — a decline, not an increase. We would rather tell you that than sell you a scare. What has not declined is wind: Smith County logs more thunderstorm-wind events than hail events, the reverse of Grayson County up at Sherman. Wind and trees are the Tyler risk.
We document, thoroughly and in writing — dated photos, a written scope, the storm date it ties to. We do not file your claim, negotiate with your carrier, or tell you what your policy owes; that is between you and your adjuster, and a roofer who tells you otherwise is doing you no favors. What we can do is be on the roof when your adjuster is, so the two of you are looking at the same damage at the same time.
Free inspection, honest scope, real warranty. Most service work scheduled within 24–48 hours.
