"At least 80% of the town of Wylie was damaged by the hail." That is the National Weather Service, 11 April 2016, describing a 5.25-inch stone. Roofs in this town are not theoretical.
Wylie has the worst verified hail history of any city in this part of the metro, and it is not close.
On 11 April 2016, between 5:07 and 5:19 in the evening, Wylie took 5.25-inch hail. The National Weather Service's own record states: "At least 80% of the town of Wylie was damaged by the hail." A separate 4.25-inch report from the same twelve minutes adds: "roofs of some homes and businesses were penetrated by the hail." Not dented — penetrated. A 3.50-inch stone was measured near Wylie East High School in the same storm, plus 2.75-inch and 1.50-inch reports. Three weeks earlier, on 23 March 2016, 1.75-inch hail fell in an episode the NWS priced at "around 700 million dollars in overall hail damage." More recently, on 25 March 2025, the fire department reported "hail up to ping pong ball size accumulated 4 to 6 inches deep at Wylie Fire Station 1 on S. Ballard St."
Part of the explanation is geography. Wylie's corporate limits contain 22.1 square miles of land and 15.2 square miles of water — over 40% of the city is Lake Lavon surface. Lakefront lots in Wylie have open fetch across the reservoir with nothing to break the wind before it reaches the ridge.
Wylie adopted the 2021 codes with the NCTCOG regional amendments; the IRC came in under Ordinance 2022-16 on 8 February 2022. Its fire-classification amendment is stricter than the base code — Wylie deletes the IRC's "designated by law" and "within three feet of a lot line" limiters, so the requirement reads simply: "Class A, B, or C roofing shall be installed", on every roof. Ice barrier underlayment is answered No.

That concentrates load on the ridge, the rakes and the windward eave, which is exactly where a poorly detailed roof starts to lift.
You usually cannot tell from the ground, and that is the problem after a big hail event. Large hail fractures the fibreglass mat under the surface granules. The shingle looks intact, sheds water for another year or two, and then fails early and in a pattern that no longer clearly points back to the storm.
