We rarely specify 45 mil for North Texas projects because the hail history in DFW makes the upgrade to 60 mil a clear long-term value.
60 mil TPO is the most-installed thickness in Texas commercial roofing and the default spec we recommend for the majority of DFW, Austin, and Houston-area projects. It hits the value sweet spot: substantially more puncture and hail resistance than 45 mil, manufacturer warranties of 20–25 years, and a per-square-foot installed cost that is justifiable across a wide range of building types.
60 mil TPO carries Class 4 impact resistance ratings when installed in approved system configurations — meaning your insurance carrier may discount your premium for hail mitigation. We spec 80 mil TPO frequently for class-A commercial properties, hospitals, hotels, and any building where downtime from a roof failure would be catastrophic. The upgrade from 60 to 80 mil typically adds 10–15% to membrane material cost — usually a fraction of the labor cost, and well worth it on the right project.
Beyond mil thickness, TPO membranes come with optional backing materials laminated to the underside of the sheet. The two most common are fleeceback TPO and feltback TPO. Both are used primarily for fully-adhered installations — where the membrane is glued to the substrate rather than mechanically fastened — but they serve slightly different purposes.
Fleeceback TPO has a thick polyester fleece laminated to the back of the membrane. The fleece adds three things: superior bonding surface for adhesives (the fleece grips adhesive far better than smooth TPO), additional puncture and tear resistance, and a cushioning layer that bridges minor substrate imperfections.
