How to Prepare Your Dallas Roof for Winter
We know that harsh winters don’t come to mind when you think of Texas. But Dallas is no stranger to snow, ice storms, and rapidly changing temperatures. We’re going to tell you the things you should do yourself and the things you should have a professional do to prepare your roof for winter in and around Dallas.
Why It’s Important to Prepare
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Ever heard that one? The key reason you want to make sure your roof is prepared for Winter in Dallas is that roofing must be done in warmth. You roof needs regular temperatures over 40, preferably closer to 50 for the integrity of the materials. Shingles that are applied in cold temperatures will not properly adhere, meaning the first blustery day will leave you roofless. So any repairs or replacements need to be handled while it is still warm outside. We highly recommend scheduling a free inspection and corresponding roof maintenance by the end of the year, every year.
Do Your Own Inspection
Every roof inspection by Roof Experts is free and easily scheduled! Before that, though, here are a few things you can check out yourself before we arrive. Plus, you can verify that your Christmas lights are properly applied so we don’t have to fuss at you.
Missing Shingles
Though you may not be a roofer, there are some things you can take a look at yourself. Take a walk around your home to be sure you’re seeing your roof from lots of different angles. If you have a missing shingle or two, this is something you may be able to repair yourself. But if you notice large patches, you’ll want to give us a call.
Sagging Roof
By looking at your home from different angles, you can see if there are any instances of sagging. If so, give us a call right away. This issue indicates a structural problem or damage to the roof decking. You’ll want to get this repaired before the addition of winter snow and ice.
Losing Granules
If you clean out your gutters (please do before winter!) and notice they are full of little roofing pebbles, you may need a new roof. Missing asphalt granules will make shingles appear smoother and won’t allow for proper protection from UV rays and precipitation. Don’t let a new roof sound daunting! Most of our re-roofs are done in the span of one day!
Check the Attic
Look for signs of leaks in your attic. Water stains on the walls or floors can show that there is an issue somewhere. If you can, find the source of the leak so you can make a temporary repair before we arrive.
Call Roof Experts
As mentioned, all of our roof inspections are available for free. Do your own look-around, then call us to make sure there’s nothing you’ve missed.
