How to Stay Cool During a Texas Summer

The long and the short of it is, sit in cool water and hydrate, or stay inside. Worried that staying inside means you’re missing out on your steps? Don’t worry, we’re listing some weird and wonderful museums for you to visit, even if you think you’re not a ‘museum person.’ Because sometimes how to stay cool in a Texas summer just means pretending it isn’t happening.

Dallas

Head on a Platter Illusion

  • Museum of Illusions:
    • Spend the day in disbelief with illusions ranging from handheld to full-room! Turn yourself into a kaleidoscope and have a great time walking on the ceiling.
  • National Video Game Museum
    • You may not be getting as many steps in here because of how much is interactive! Challenge your friends to head to head games, play the biggest version of Pong you’ve ever seen, and either re-live or experience a 1980s bedroom complete with posters, vinyls, and of course videogames.

The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame

  • National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame
    • Learn about and honor the women who shaped the American west. Explorers, ranchers, artists, teachers, writers and more who are often footnotes in history take center stage here. Come find out surprising facts about Justice Sandra Day O’Connor!
  • International Bowling Museum
    • It’s niche, we know. But how old would you guess bowling is? We were off my about 4800 years and we bet you are, too. Learn about the sport and have some hands-on fun!

Austin

  • Balloon Museum
    • Not hot air balloons, the kind you grew up with at birthday parties. Come see how innovative artists create one-of-a-kind pieces and experiences with the often over-looked balloon.

The iconic architecture of the LBJ Library and Museum.

  • LBJ Presidential Library
    • If you’ve ever waned to deep-dive into a president, this is the place for you. Besides the museum exhibits, this library boasts thousands of hours of audio, video, and text not only on the life of LBJ but of a decade of radical change in American history.
  • Texas Toy Museum
    • Which Ninja Turtle is your favorite? If you have an immediate answer to that, we have a great place for you to spend an afternoon! Say hi to Stretch Armstrong and the Garbage Pail Kids then jam on some classic arcade games!

Houston

No problems here! Just a great day in Houston.

  • Space Center
    • “Houston, we have a problem.” But that problem isn’t ‘nothing to do’! Launch yourself into the world of NASA, get a special tour, meet an astronaut, and check out the latest documentary presented by Tom Hanks.

      Houston Museum of Fine Arts

  • Museum of Fine Arts
    • Modern, classic, immersive, and three-dimensional can all be found under one roof. We’d say this would be a good spot for an afternoon but it would be more like a whole day. Or 2.
  • National Museum of Funeral History
    • If you thought bowling was niche, this one is even more so. But don’t be scared! For all of human history, the end of life has been celebrated and people have been mourned and memorialized. See how it’s done across cultures and status, from Jazz funerals to the papal procession.
  • 1940 Air Terminal Museum
    • First of all, you could spend a couple hours just looking at this incredible building. But that’s an activity for a fall day, not a hot summer one. But this summer you can check out the history of flight attendant uniforms and the local Trans-Texas airline! PS- you can also book this stunning place as a venue!

Conclusion

The best way to stay cool in a Texas summer is to pretend it isn’t happening. Stay inside and just wait the 120 or so days for it to pass. While you’re waiting you may as well learn some fun stuff! One benefit of the great state of Texas is that there is no shortage of things to do. While it boasts innumerable natural wonders, let’s cool off from the heat by supporting local and interesting museums.
